Anyone had any personal experience with Plantar fasciitis ?
Just waiting to get an Ultra Sound to see what it is and was wondering what different treatment worked for you?
I thought this was an older persons problem, not a 40 year old problem. This was not caused by Running as I dont do any.

Had it a few years ago. Cortisone injection fixed it.

I picked this up in a backpacker shower somewhere in my travels (I'm a bit younger than you) and it just wouldn't go away.

Tried everything.

Last year I went to a new Dr and he suggested.... gaffe tape.

Basically you cover the wart with gaffe for about six weeks – changing the gaffe when it gets too nasty / falls off and grinding down the wart with a pumice stone if you care about how it looks. Noone knows quite why it works (best theory is it starves the skin of oxygen and moisture which causes the skin barrier around the virus / wart to crack and let your body take out the wart virus), but it's clinically tested with a higher success rate than freezing etc.

Dave, plantar fasciitis is not a wart thingy, its an inflammation of the thick ligament called the "plantar fascia" that supports the arch of the foot.

I would never have thought that it was yet another use for that roll of gaffa we all have in our gig bag!

When I started reading Dave's post I had to go back and check that I was on the right track.

SO just got back from the Podiatrist, with a quote of $800 for Orthotics?
Now I will have to sell something to finance this.
I think my Vintage 2 x channel Neve Preamp will go up sale?

Dale. To save you some cash, my physio took one look at my very old and expensive orthotics and laughed. They gave me new ones that they molded to my feet for only $50. They do the same job! Might be worth checking out...

Good to know. I will do some more investigating. I dont mind paying the money if it will do the job right the first time.

my two sets of orthodics were well over a thousand bucks...

Ok - I hesitate to comment given I got the wrong affliction first up but...

I'm young-ish (31) and had a problem with the arch of my foot when coming back from working O/S – the cause seemed to be I have flat feet and had been wearing thongs as my primary footwear while working in asia (bad news for my arch).

Anyway – the Dr recommended I try some orthotic inserts from the chemist before spending money on expensive custom jobbies and they worked great. Buy once buy right and all that but if there's an obvious cause may be worth speaking to your gp about cheaper solutions.

Wife had it. Our medico basically said that time is the only true healer, everything else just helps you get through the day until time does its things.

One thing she did find helpful was a tip from her physio - stand on a step with your heels dangling over the edge, like a diver doing a springboard backflip. Raise yourself up til your standing on tippytoes, then all the way back til your heel is well under the step height and your foot is bending up.

This is to be done very gently, the aim is to keep the tendon flexible as it heals rather than reinjure.

She's fine now, btw, but sorry to say you're looking at 6 months +. Its a slow heal.

And no, its not an age thing at all. Its actually more of a sports type injury. Walkers get it.

I was expecting a post about a new synth - Plantar Fasciitis.

I got the podiatrist to use some sports tape and tape one of my feet up. She said this would mildly simulate the repositioning of what orthotics would do. Well the taping of my foot gave a lot of relief from pain and pressure from being on my feet at work all night. So I can see the orthotics will make a difference that will be worth paying for.
Mind you I think in my case with high arches and super inaction or what ever it is called, I will have to implement some calf stretching as my muscles are really tight, and with some angling strengthening I am confident that I will have this beat within 6-12 months.
I tried standing on one foot with my eyes closed for 30 seconds and I could not do it well at all. I felt like an old man falling over ever 10 seconds. Tsk Tsk .
I have read where some people have thought that orthotics was a scam and I am sure there would be cases of this. I think every bodies situation is a little different and I am hoping for a positive outcome in this area.

Speaking of orthotics, here's a chance to tell another interesting story.....
Last year, not long after moving back to the Mornington Peninsular, I was driving at about 1;30 am along Point Napean Rd, to pick my boys up from the pub. Just after a bend in the Rd i hit the brakes hard because someone was lying in the middle of the road and a girl was on her knees next to him. As i got out of the car she was crying saying he had just been hit by another car. They had been walking on the other side of the rd, she was in front by 10 or 20 ft and the car hit him and he flew thought the air, landing on the other side of the rd. Both where very drunk. He was trying to get up etc so i managed to convince him to stay put and left my car, hazard lights on, as a barrier for oncoming traffic till the ambo arrived. No blood or guts but i suspected internal or head injuries. The police arrived then the ambo, and after giving all the details I had i went on my journey.
Next day I took my youngest son to a street long boarding event at the back of Portsea and standing there was a bloke wrapped in bandages....sure enough it was him. Introduced himself as Rob. The skateboarding event was why he was visiting the Peninsula. No serious injury, just some missing skin and bruises. Incredibly lucky! We had a great chat and he said he had lost his orthotics shoes.......they flew off his feet when he was hit by the car! Had I seen them, he asked? They are expensive and he would hate to loose them! Where on the road, was he hit last night? Did I remember because he sure as hell couldn't!
So we drove back to the accident site and found one shoe about 20 ft off the road in the tea tree scrub. The other was nowhere to be seen so we returned to the skateboarding hills behind Portsea. Just after we got there the Police pulled up to check on the skateboarding....all was sweet and we immediately recognized them as the police who attended the accident. They then said they had found his other shoe after Rob left in the ambo and it was back at the police station!
Rob and I exchanged ph numbers and catch up, sometimes go for a surf whenever he is visiting the peninsula always with a gift of a bottle of wine. Still don't know his real surname....in my phone he is Rob Airborne.

If your calf muscles are tight, this is a good stretch to do. I do 3 sets of 10 a day, mixed with lunges, to help with shin splints. It works very well, however you need to do it carefully. Slowly count to 3 on the way down.

That story made my day.

I have been told to stay away form the stair treatment at the moment as it puts more strain on the plantar region area. I basically have a lump (hernia) under the arch from overuse so I can only do the leaning up against the wall technique which is doing a basic stretch for now.

Chris your story was pretty impressive.
