an awesome 32 channel desk is not a Toft ATB. There are seriously loads of decent consoles in that size floating about because few people have the space for a serious sized console. If you do have the space troll around and score yourself something sweet.

2 minutes on ebay and there's this. You'd want to check it out of course but mostly discrete design (with 2520 footprint discrete opamps that you can swap out for any API style DOA), loaded with transformers, ripe for modding (if you're that way inclined), built like a tank with loads of routing and you should be able to get it for a bargain. (note: I know nothing about this particular item as I'm not connected to the seller or auction in anyway).

To be honest unless you're buying a specific console for a specific sound, I'm not sure why anyone would buy a low to mid priced new console when there are so many great vintage units around...

To be fair the maintenance on an old desk of that size would be insane.

Plus I'm sure Rusty would agree, the space saved would always be better used setting up more synths

Maintenance? Depending on condition and console of course but I doubt it would be that difficult (or time consuming). I kept a 24/8/16/2 chilton running fine for a number of years 30 years after its manufacture. Almost all parts were still available and for the ones that weren't suitable replacements were found. When there were problems it was modular and I could remove the offending units and keep the console running. It sounded excellent, loads of sowter transformers on input and output, discrete preamps, real VU meters and lots more. And it is still making good music now. Now, I'm not necessarily advocating for the yamaha I mentioned above I don't know much about that model other than what I've read online but my previous experience with that era yamaha consoles has been excellent (pm1000 and pm2000) and I guarantee its better bang for your buck but then there are lots of other options out there and they've been gone over on this forum a lot.

I've worked on an ATB, it was pretty flimsy, we lost pots regularly in spite of the light use and to replace them required a real deconstruction and the console being out of action whilst we did it. The meter bridge was extra, the faders felt cheap, the sound was vanilla and I doubt it'll be worth anything in 10 years time if it even still works reliably... But hey thats just my opinion.

Fair enough, just seeing that many channels I see it as being one of those constant upkeep jobs. But then I've never had a desk remotely that size before. That Yamaha is definitely a nice desk, interesting comments on the Toft.

Seriously Myles, I respect yours, and others opinions, knowledge and expertise on what does or does not make a good desk.

A big desk is probably the last of my priorties at the moment; and I think that I'll park it for now, and come back to garner expert opinions later on / in a new thread; for which I would greatly appreciate yourr input.

I did read through a lot of comments on the Toft in a previous thread where someone was looking; and of course lots of opinions on GearSlutz. I just think it looks pretty! (not exactly the best measure for a good desk I know)

I realise you're parking the discussion, but I'll chip in my bit.

A couple of years back I was also going to invest in a Toft 32.

However I heeded the advice from Trockers and ended up with a beautiful early 80s Auditronics. Maintenance has not been a drama (and I'm certainly no firestick expert). And I've scored a console that would have cost $100K-ish back in the 80s, with a sound that no Toft can come anywhere near to producing.

Looks definitely have something to do with buying consoles or any gear for that matter (ask Rick about white). If I'm going to sit and work at it for hours it has to be something I like looking at and it has to feel good to work on too so I agree that you need a console that is pretty. As to footprint that is also a concern but if you're looking at a 32 channel board your footprint has to be pretty big already and I doubt the Toft is much smaller than that yamaha I posted... And for me the yamaha looks more like 'real' console than the toft, but then thats just me. Also if you're concerned about getting the best bang for your buck so that you can buy more cool gear then second hand good condition quality consoles will be a great way to save cash...
