Hey Phil,

are the eq knobs sweepable or notched? What's the history on the unit and any info on White Instruments? Never heard of them or any of their gear...

Just thought I'd answer one of the questions for you.

The White 4001 was designed as a high quality Control Room/Sound Reinforcement equalizer some time back in the 70's. The studios loved them, the PA guys preferred the graphic (fader) type eq's

It consists of 27 peak and dip equalizers on ISO third octave centers... 40, 50, 63, 80,100, 125Hz all the way up to 16Khz. Range was + or -10db. There's also a 12db/octave variable high pass filter which sweeps from 20Hz up to 160Hz.

I think the 4001 was transformer balanced input and single ended (unbalanced) output.

It was quite common to see them in the monitoring chain of large studios to try and flatten out the speaker response.

One thing to keep in mind, if you're thinking of using it as an EQ in your rack of effects, is that the EQ bypass switch is on the back of the unit. I'm not sure why they did that, more than likely because there was no room left on the front panel.

Somewhere in the archives I think I've got a manual for it.

If I remember correctly the IC's are all on sockets so it would be easy to upgrade them.

Not sure if you can still get the EQ pots. Rob might be able to chime in on that one.

LRC circuits are all hermetically sealed.

Impressive looking beasts with 28 knobs within a 2RU space.

If you're looking for an EQ to insert in the monitoring chain then this is the ticket.

Thanks for the speedy reply. That's exactly where I was thinking of putting it - sweeten up the monitoring chain for better translation. That or sending some stereo stems through to it for post eq'ing...

These units do have an EQ 'in/out' on the front panel, as the low cut pot is also a switch.
On the back is a 'bypass' switch, as well as a level pot for the second output.
The freq pots are sweepable, but are very smooth, and the markers are one dB each, so they are very easy to reset to even a half dB accuracy.
