We have a big old pair of ALTEC 604-8G monitors on consignment at Pony Music at the moment - owner wants $500 for the pair (including speaker leads).
These things sound great, that BIG 70's sound!

I will attempt to take some photos and add some specs tomorrow. These have just come in on consignment.
I would love them in our studio here but just don't have a need for more monitors.

Altec 604-8G

Dimensions are roughly as follows:
HEIGHT - 812mm (or 870mm with wheels on - casters are removable)
WIDTH - 585mm
DEPTH - 443mm (or 473 with front grill on)

We plugged them in and tested them when they came in and all seemed to work well - although we didn't do any thorough testing other than run some tracks through them. Items are on consignment in our store by owner and he is asking $500 for them.

Since I posted the info yesterday I have 3 people interested in these and I am emailling the same info to them now.

What a bargain... get some Mastering Lab crossovers, an old McIntosh power amp and you've got a killer monitoring setup... Wally Heiders Studio 1 circa 1975... sweet sound.

Not a Stonehenge... too small for a 620... maybe 612 although they look to narrow.

Ideally they should be in a 9 cubic foot enclosure... a 620 cabinet.

You might track them down at audioheritage.org That's the best place on the web for everything about Altecs... or talk to Robert Grumberg... knows more about Altecs than anyone else in Australia.

You'll need a bit more cubic volume than a BBC OB van if you really want the Altecs to open up... and of course a Neve console.

Do whatever you can to get the Mastering Lab crossovers... you won't regret it.

Thanks gents, I'm exited abut these beasts. O.B van too small for sure, I thinking more about the equipment in one circa 1975. .
I want to try to get these speakers working at their best for use as the big monitors in a system with Auratones, KRK V4's and the Altecs.

Is it true these work best with low power single ended valve amps? That seems like audio file mumbo jumbo to me, I would have thought some Crowns or Auditech Murray's would be great.
Any advise on amping and crossover improvements would be welcome.

They don't need to be single-ended valve amps, but they certainly don't need a lot of power. I'd say between 10 and 50 watts per side will give you plenty of loudness. We used Crown D50 amps at CBS back in the day...

I have a pair of 604-8K speakers (see my avatar), they are driven by a preamp (with 6dB of loss!), custom electronic crossover (24dB per octave with some response tweaks) and 4 x 100 watts NAD amps and I don't get much past 10 o'clock on the volume pot! I've been toying with building a set of 4 x 20W class A transistor amps, but they're not cheap!

Paul... at the risk of repeating myself... Mastering Lab crossovers

Here's a schematic for it but you'll need to check the impedance as the Mastering Lab was designed to work with 16 ohm drivers. I have seen a few 604-8G's with 16 ohm drivers.


If your interested in building it then PM me your email for a schematic and inductor details in PDF format.

Otherwise bi-amp them with an electronic crossover and Class A valve amps.

I agree with Otto they don't need a lot of power as they're quite efficient, but keep in mind, extra power is more for headroom than volume.

well that's a shame Bob,

I wish I could offer you something myself, I only have small monitors spare to offer, Dynaudio BM10 passives, Yamaha NS20, you've already had TB2+, and I also have old hifi in the way of Celestion Ditton 22, which are on ebay now.
And only If I could replace my Tannoy Arden 15's, with a pair of 12's, I would let go of the Ardens.
