Hi All, I'm after a nice kick drum.
Preferably just the kick to keep size down, but I'd be open to a few toms...
It'll be for recording, so something I can pull a nice thud from.
I'm particularly interested in smaller sized (18") models...but beggars can't be choosers.
Any out there??? I'm in the Sydney area.
Thanks!

Hmm, I don't often say 'nice thud' and 18" in the same sentence.
I've been planning to sell my vintage Gretsch Round Badge if you have the budget.
12 x 8 and 14 x 14" toms, 18 x 14" kick.
But they are pretty rare and collectable.
Sound good too of course.

Really? Do you find the 18" lacks thud?? I thought for recording it might be just what the doctor ordered to fit those huge bass notes onto small speakers?
...I suppose this might be straying into the drum recording section now though...
Chris, I dare say the Gretch will be out of my budget, I'm looking to pay $100-$300, but could stretch a bit more for the right kick.
Let me know what you've got!

Hi Alex,
I'm with Chris on the 18" comment - you'll find that 20" or 22" is more versatile (and probably more common / cheaper).
There are heaps of well priced kits on eBay - suggest looking for something like a Yamaha Stage Custom kit prob. around $800 for the whole kit (incl hardware).

Re: WTB Kick Drum in Sydney
It's all subjective, but I find 22" a minimum for 'thud'.
The favourite kick I own is a 24" Camco, and I recently picked up a 26" vintage Premier that definitely thuds.
18" bass drums sing - if anything, like a tenor voice.
Never recorded an 18" bass drum that didn't sound small and pillowy. Great, if that's what you want for the song.
For rock and pop type material I recommend 22".
For jazz, fusion, singer-songwriter, an 18" can be awesome.

Absolutely no puns intended I can assure you....
So,if any of you out there could just let go of your 22 inchers that would be great ...
But then maybe you're all too busy giving yours a right good pounding?
Anyway, I'm sure I will root one out eventually!
