Replaced, so no need for it anymore!
Excellent monitor controller with its own DAC (some say compares to benchmark).
$250 takes it. Perfect working condition.

its "nearly" what i need.... but might be close enough to get the job done if its easy to grab

Do you know if there are any disadvantages in using the onboard optical on an old MBP to feed this?

I can't imagine it would matter too much, the DAC is on the controller.
I've fed it with optical and spdif from a PC and it works great.
