Not sydney, but there is this guy that makes lovely Bamboo racks in Melbourne, they look stunning - have a squiz;

I do like the look of that Bamboo stuff though.

I bought some side panels from Mixing Table, and the guy was very helpful and good to deal with.

If you can handle the shipping, highly recommended.

You know every now and then somebody posts up one of these overseas beautiful hardwood studio cabinets sites and I think , hmm I could offer that out of my woodworking workshop in my studio
then I think .. nah nobody will pay for the wood plus the time . those uk prices look too cheap to me

anybody really going to pay $400-500 for a hardwood 4 unit case ..?

I will build them all day long locally if its really a market !


not into the bamboo stuff , i think the only legitimate use of exotic hard woods is something that will last and you will run your human hands over it enough times to understand we need to conserve wood .

^ How so? Bamboo grows incredibly fast and easily. Not so with hardwoods at all, even pine takes like 25 years to get to a decent size. If we're consuming at such a fast pace then growing time really is the key to keeping it sustainable.

If you're against composites I see the problem, but everything's going that way these days, again I assume it's to do with the rate of consumption and minimising wastage.

Also these things are made locally, that means more now than it ever did.

To your question, would local hardwood racks sell? I think so for sure, as long as you keep the production time/costs down, there will always be a market for nicer things but just wouldn't expect to sell a heap of them. For example, there is a company that makes boutique guitar pedals in Tassie not far from my town, that is doing quite well. Now the pedals do cost a very pretty penny and I'm sure employee numbers and production levels are not high in a traditional sense, but the quality is, extremely. So it sells, not in huge numbers, but enough to make a few bucks a long the way.

I think the bamboo looks great, i'm unsure if it's environmentally bad to produce composite wood, but surely better than plastics?

I've stopped recording so much so the SKB'S are just an eyesore for me, i'll put them up here for peanuts in the next few weeks.

oh look i am not against bamboo at all if your going to use composites you should use bamboo or hemp or whatever they have figured out works and grows fast .

If your going to have household items built well enough to be heirloom pieces that last for generations then you should use beautiful hardwoods , save the forest and don't use exotic woods for anything less then something that going to last a lifetime at least .

equipment racks could well be a stretch for that philophosy ..

but the point is turning exotic woods into 3mm veneers to cover composite wood panels that get thrown out every 10 years is a total environment tragedy .

using bamboo that is cleverly disguised as real wood doesn't help the actual problem
the problem is people want beautiful wood but that want acres of it they want it dead flat in unrealistic widths that trees no longer grow in ..

leave the wood solid and leave it alone unless your going to rub your hand over it to get a weird familiar man to wood sensation .

Bamboo composite panels just don't have that feel .. either does veenered composite mdf panels ..either does real wood immersed in plastic polyurethane lacquers
so you might as well use composite if your going to plastic sold hardwoods them .

Yeah but that's more to do with obsolescence than the actual timber, and that is a problem that encompasses all materials in all industries.

I totally agree that solid hardwood is a beautiful material but to be honest we're so used to throwing things away that it would be a waste making more things out of it. Ask yourself realistically how many people buying coffee tables and other multitudes of crap would really be able to tell (or have a clue) between solid hardwood, laminate, composite, stained jungle wood etc. Much less treasure it for a lifetime.

I think Bamboo is one of the better alternatives these days, sure it doesn't come in big flat pieces, but the grain is tight and it can still (I think) look really stunning.

Anyway, the amount of shit guitars being produced wasting rosewood is the real tragedy.

Just wanted to report back ...I ordered one of these based on this post, and just got it today ...I can't comment on the sustainability of this vs 100 year old timber either, but wow, looks really quite fantastic, holds my 20kg tube amp on top with ease and it passes the tactile test too...So, would highly recommend (not affiliated etc etc) though I now feel the urge to replace the black, carpeted ply wood monstrosities in my studio...
