I have decided I want to make an aurotne type of speaker,
a speaker that really makes you work to get a good mix, aswell as cheap and nasty......
I am thinking a 5 inch speaker, a box, and maybe a an active type of box.
is it cheaper to make or look for a crappy hifi speaker from a garage sale or something similar?

Have a look at these speakers, they're designed to replace the old auratones. It may give you some ideas.

FWIW Simon, I'd go for Otto's recommendation rather than trying to DIY or garage sale. Its one thing to have to work for your mix, its another to have to work with a pair of monitors that simply will not reproduce sound accurately.
By all means have some crappy garage sale speakers in your room to hear what your mix sounds like on crappy speakers, but from my own sad experience, do not mix with them.
