Hey all- was helping someone could do me a favour.
I need the dimensions (just roughly, within a mm or two is fine) for the classic Neve/Marconi red knobs.
I'm just doing a front panel layout for a project I'm working on, and I'm keen to get drilling/printing labels but I haven't sourced the knobs yet (tricky buggers to find!). If anyone has an old 1073/1081 etc with the knobs, or anything Brent Averil/Pheonix Audio/newer Neve I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know. Don't need any fancy dimensions, just the diameter.
For those unsure, I'm talking about these-

Re: Neve knob size (classic red Marconi knobs)
Hi Alistair
Really...13 pages and not one measurement in the prodigy post? I'm thinking it's worthy of a post to skylar. I'm assuming they are recreating the exact size of the original.
Anyway I have one at the studio, I'll check it tomorrow and let you know, unless someone gives you the answer
Are you doing the EZ1073 .... or some 1290's...or?
Ben

I know Ben! I've read the whole thread more than once, assuming it had to be there. I even downloaded the .IGS files off the GroupDIY account to try and get the info, but I can't find a free mac viewer for the files.
If you could measure that would be fantastic! Believe me, I've been looking for a few days now and I can't believe it's not out there.
I'm making a 4 channel, 2ru 1290 unit. I'm going the whole hog and seeing how good a job I can do of the front panel, so I've been learning how to use CorelDraw and a couple of layout programs- when I measure things by hand the few millimeters here and there add up.
The EZ1073 w/ EQ looks pretty cool- unfortunately (or fortunately $$$ wise!) I started these last year before the EZ1073 was around. They should be finished by now but the cost of Carnhill transformers x4 in GBP has put me off for a while!

Hi Al
I've found the software at front panel express very helpful in the past. http://www.frontpanelexpress.com/produc ... index.html
You may know them already...no need to order the panels through them, but the software has some ready made actions for front panel details. And quick to learn. And free.
cheers

Re: Neve knob size (classic red Marconi knobs)
Thanks Ben- Yep, I've got Front Panel designer, but to the best of my knowledge the export functions are somewhat limited. I'm intending to get some white ink transfers printed, and reading up on that I need a program that can utilise "Pantone" colouring- apparently CorelDraw is the easiest to use of those programs. Front Panel is quick and easy for mock ups though- and maybe it can do the pantone stuff, but Corel is fine for now.
And yeah Angus, I'm not expecting to find old Neve knobs. I know Averil and Pheonix (and Neve) sell small quantities of the knobs, but they are bloody expensive. I'm sorta hoping the Prodigy moulding will get of the ground, as they are hoping $5-10 per knob, rather than the $40-$50 everyone else is charging. Will wait and see....
Did you hear any big differences between the Marinair and Carnhill?

Re: Neve knob size (classic red Marconi knobs)
Yeah, I've done a bit of reading about the transformers, and I have to say my bullshit meter peaked a few times. Everyone seems to have a different opinion about whether the Carnhills are ok- but suddenly the Marinairs have been lifted to mythical status. I'm sure the Carnhills sound great- they certainly aren't cheap.
If I can't find anything else $30ish a knob will have to do- but hopefully the groupbuy will come through and I can get 12 for the price of 4!

Hi Alistair
If you're referring to the overall diameter then it is 25.4mm or 1 inch in the old system.
Hope this helps.
