Source for Valve Power Transformers?

Hi everyone

I am a debutante here at Turtlerock but a regular for a few years now on Prodigy. I look forward to talking to you guys.

Could anyone point me in the direction of a source for large power transformers for making high gain valve guitar amps? I have sources overseas that others use on foreign electronics forums, but given the weight for something like this, the shipping seems to be about $200 alone just to bring in a 6.3v@10a transformer!!!

Does anyone know of places locally that do cheap power transformers?

Anyone here build high gain guitar amps?

Thanks in advance

There are places in most capital cities that will wind transformers to your specs, like Gamatron in Adelaide, and surprisingly cost effective for one offs. However, to my knowledge, nobody actually manufactures them here any longer.

You can get Hammond transformers (US Made) from EVATCO in Brisbane. http://www.evatco.com.au/index.htm

A sample from their catalogue is: 378CX 400-0-400 465mA 6.3v 6A 50V bias tap - $220.00

I get my transformers wound by Harbuch

http://www.harbuch.com.au/

I speak to Peter over the phone and he give me quotes. He designs them and he gets the built.

I usually get toroidal ones, but I am sure he can do the other sort (E-I?)

Can't hurt to find out how much it would be.
