Looking for information on old low watt SS guitar Amp

Postby natwalk » Sun May 29, 2011 10:19 pm

Hey guys been working on some DIY, pedals and other bits and pieces for the studio, and have finally decide to do something about an old guitar amp I was given by a mate years ago which is in a sorry state. Its a little practice amp, no name or anything like that on it and my google searches have been less than successful based on the little detail I have. I am looking for any detail I can get on this thing with the aim of restoring it and getting it useful again. It has a few odd features combined Tone and power on, three instrument inputs and what looks like a bunch of germaniums inside. The only real identifier I have for this is the A-35C followed by a smaller Is-3 on the trace side of the board (see top image below). I've got a bunch of pics I'm going to attach, I would appreciate it if anyone could nudge me in the right direction to more information about this one. Just a quick warning to the electronically squeemish, the following images may be disturbing to some people :ymsick:

If you need a better look at anything let me know and I'll do what I can to get a better shot.
My final goal woth this would be to get it operational again, adding a tone stack (low, mid, high), speaker out, headphone out, jewel light for power on and off, and restor it to some kind of enclosure. Any advice you guys can give would be invaluable,

Nate

I'm guessing from the tumble weeds rolling past this post that no one has any idea what the hell this thing is :-\ . Does anyone know a forum or website that might have this sort of info?

Thanks for any info you guys can provide,

Nate

From what I can see it is like a lot of early SS amps and there were a lot of them from an enormous number of manufacturers in the late 60s early 70s. None sounded very good and the chance of getting a schematic to revitalise that one is minimal at best. Personally, I'd advise spending the time and money building a small valve amp kit. It will sound much better, the components will be reliable and you'll have a schematic if you need it in the future. JMHO.

Thanks for the reply, I thought that was most likely going to be the result (no info, no schematic) I had decided to use this as my first step into amps, then go to valves next, I was looking at a Firefly as my first either that or a Fender Champ style as I don't have a Fender style amp yet.

Thanks again,

From the solid state hi fi amps I had years ago, it was often the output transistors that blew, esp if the amp got run with no or shorted speaker. Think you can do some rudimentary tests with a multi meter to see if they are in order. Same goes for the other components. Also and firstly, check to see if you are getting power off the mains transformer and then DC of some sort from them power supply. Thats about as tech as I can get in this space.

Cheers

Thanks mate, will have a bit of a poke around and see what it turns up, there is some dodgy work that's been done to it in the past so I was hoping for a schematic to sort out what should be there that has been altered. Will do some tests anyway and see what's what as best I can and learn as much as I can as I go. Thanks again for the help,
