Re: On the virtues of working with ones hands
Very interesting - thanks for the link. I'll be getting that book methinks.
As noted elsewhere on TRF, 2012 will be the year that I learn to build audio gear. 2011 was the year I learned to work with concrete and to build a ceiling.

the more skills you learn in more areas, the more you learn how worthless most commercial consumer enterprise is, and how rare it is to stumble upon true quality. The best stuff is truly hiding in hermit's sheds imo, made by seasoned DIYers.

a very respected science writer wrote on this topic too, in a slightly different, but related light. an excerpt:

It is so satisfying to make stuff. Referring to the DIY monsters thread where Rick says how sad it is to see your DIY babies leave home. I can relate to that, as I make (in Australia) tube guitar amps from recycled tube radio carcasses.
I havnt kept any, but when I get back to Australia, I'll be finishing some projects for me to keep.

I'll also be giving this a go. I can make leads till the cows come home, but making other stuff is a new world. Bring on 2012 I say!

Matthew Crawford's "Shop Class as Soul Craft" is also a good read on this topic.
