The Console Is King: UM Project

“It’s like the future of yesterday, today!” A step into Allen Farmelo’s Fort Greene mix room reveals a unique new console which sports sleek, retro-futurist lines, and suggests an untapped ability to serve double-duty as the helm for the Star Trek Enterprise.

Housing up to 24 channels of API channel strips, an integrated control surface, a computer keyboard, and speaker stand, this striking new desk-on-wheels owes much of its heritage to classic “mid-century modern” designs, where form and function are effortlessly linked together by a minimalist’s eye.

I do wish there was more detail though.

After spending all that money on the API bits he couldn't afford any angled cuts?

I think it's alright looking - maybe not what I'd build for myself in that situation, but it at least has a "thing" to it.
my only complaint is it looks a bit unbalanced. Visually it's falling forward.

It's a little Ikea for my liking (don't mind the front on shot). No rounded edges. Whoaa?@%!
Wheels were a good idea but again should be multi directional and on all legs.

Thanks for the added link Barney.

Jeebus....is that 'Burmese River Teak' laminate? One of my old girlfriend's Dad had that in his caravan.
I'm with Wez on this one. If you're gonna custom build, at least make it look sexy and get it 2 pac'd.
I actually think he woulda been better off with an Argosy.

I like the idea of what he's done but I built my 'console' into a solid tas oak dining table and though it doesn't look quite a s slick as his its pretty much as functional except for the wheels. I don't have a cut down API legacy in it but you could do that easily instead of my collection of vintage and diy comps, eqs, and soon I'll add a 24 channel API based summing amp as well. Cost? about $500 all up for the desk, woodwork etc.

As a general rule I like DIY especially if its really personal...

I also enjoy not owning this console.

I think I would get distracted... sitting around imagining how to fix it's aesthetics.

Every time I add up the cost of building a custom console (and wiring it) I go looking at second hand consoles. There is some serious cost in those API modules not including wiring costs and the 'artist's' costs who designed it!! Maybe I should get of my butt and build my room first.

Bah!!

You guys are nothing but a bunch of old squares! :p

I'm glad you don't want it... because I do. It is a flippin' masterpiece! Finally someone who combines modern lines with a nod to the old cliches. It totally requires people to reshape/redesign the interior of a studio for it to fit. In the right studio context this thing would rock!

The only people that think Neve, API, MCI or (god forbid) Smart AV desks are sexy are star trek fans or antiquated people with antiquated ways who are probably just as full of dust, lead, rust and mysterious white powders as those desks themselves! Have you actually looked at an SSL? It's F@#$ing ugly! The only reason you think it is sexy is because of the name... like "Anastasia", the "babe" on the phone at the courier company.

...but really, she is probably a 44 year old single mother of 7, overweight by 400pounds, currently funding her way through rehab.

...but she sounds SOOOO lovely!!!

Shaking shit up for the younger generation.

Bauhouse is considered modern/contemporary design. I really like bauhouse design. It is quite culturally significant, which admitted probably makes it a bit of an eyesore in Australia... but in the streets of downtown east Berlin? Brilliant.

You know who to call if this desk lands in your lap ;)
