I like it... perhaps here is why.

allow me to reminisce.

When I was a kid, I got given a present, it was a vinyl version of Macarthur park.

I played it on my record player the day I got it, and played it a few times after that, and always thought it was OK, not great, but interesting. I actually, for some unknown reason thought it was roger woodward ( I also had a single of his called mexican whistler... I digress)

fast forward 25 years, and I am clearing out my parents house after the last one of them passed away, and I come across that 33 1/3 record ... Macarthur Park.

I decide to play it for old times sake. I put it on Dads record player and as I am lifting the needle, I notice the 33 1/3 record, is actually 45rpm !!!!!

its a goddam 12 inch single....

So I flip the speed over, and whaddaya know?

I have also found some records are best played at 0rpm.

When I was a wee lad of 20, I had a record player that included 78 and 16 rpm speeds.
We found, through much clinical research, that Santana' first two albums when combined with LSD, played at 16rpm (half speed), was the best stoner rock EVER. And this was before it became a genre.
We also found that just about anything played at 78 rpm (double speed) was not great, until combined with Nitrous Oxide, and then it was hilarious, but only for 5 minutes....

16 RPM was how I learned to play Eruption by Van Halen.

And I had to walk to school, uphill, both ways, through ten miles of snow.

And as to Rick's original post - I have no idea why I find this so fascinating, but I do. The pedal steel at 3:00 (ish) sounds incredibly like a restrained horn section.

And all of that sent me off to find the original.

Damn if that wasn't one hell of a recording. And what I thought was a pedal steel was actually a pedal steel and a string section.

It is amazing to hear this record at half speed.
Dolly is an incredible vocalist. Halving the speed of a performance can reveal all sorts of timing and pitch problems
that you wouldn't notice at normal speed, but not this time. The half speed actually reveals more about the gorgeous phrasing and control she has. And the arrangement too, just excellent.
