which DAC for monitoring ITB only (cheap!)

Postby capitalK » Thu Apr 19, 2012 6:08 pm

HI all,
I was thinking about getting a DAC to monitor while I’m editing at home on the ole PC.

I have the monitors running from a splitter cable out of the soundcard at the moment, but i'd like something reasonable to listen to and start to automate effects sends and filter out the unwanted mud ect...

i have some JBL LSR28p's to listen too, had em for ages, never really gave em a go... they're great!

i was thinking about this as a cheaper option:
http://www.asus.com/Multimedia/Audio_Cards/Xonar_Essence_ST/

you can swap out the op amps, they leave them unsoldered for this purpose!
has a headphone amp inbuilt, high res audio...
it seems pretty legit, am I making a terrible mistake? Am I not considering something?
i'm happy enough using the sound card "control room" for volume control, and for under $200 online??

they do a stand alone USB device that looks pretty cool too, but I’ve spent enough on studio gear.. i want the cheapest, bestest solution.

Opinions please!
cheers.

Hi Karl,

Don't know if this helps, but the sm pro 192 kHz 2 channel a/d d/a brand new on eBay for $150 would be hard to beat !

Cheers
