Hi there,

A mate of mine in Brisbane is looking at setting up a remote recording system where he
plays a genuine Blonde Hammond B3(only 1 of 2 in Oz) on clients recordings.

He is an excellent authentic player and specialises in Blues, Rock and Jazz.

He is looking at picking up a DAW for recording and was wondering whether any of you studio guys or producers see a market for this type of enterprise ??

Do you have clients that would be interested in this and what sort of fee would be reasonable. ??

Files would be up to 24/96.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated !

Sounds interesting John..
Always room for a good Hammond track on any recording I reckon - they always sound unreal. and give lots of warmth to a recording..
Our keyboard player has just bought a Korg BX-3 - can wait to hear it at rehearsals next..

Pretty much any DAW would do. It's the converters that will matter more. A while back I was actually thinking of offering a Leslie reamping service because I have a 147RV (the one with reverb) and even synths sound great put though it. I was thinking close mic pair and stereo room. If he only did a straight stereo track he could get away with stereo A to D.
I think people would be into your mate's service once they heard it. People think samples or emulations sound good, until they hear a real one and the difference is jaw dropping. He'd need a couple of good mics and pres as well though.

I think there is definitely room for something like this. I doubt it will turn into a full
time career though. It would be a superb way to make some money back on your
equipment. If he is using just a single leslie, you could probably get away with just
a pair of mics, a nice stereo preampand stereo A/D converters. Something like an
SM57 on the horn, 421 on the bass driver through I dunno... what takes your fancy?
Perhaps an pair of API's?


The biggest problem you are going to have is finding a way to catagorize the number of
drawbar combinations and their sounds for people to pick from. A set of recordings is probably
the best way. 10 or 15 base sounds to choose from. I'd use this service if the price was reasonable!
Being internet land, it's something that can be made available to the entire world not just Australia.

I guess there are going to be a few types of potential clients, some will have written parts and have sounds in mind, maybe even done with NI B4 /logic organ or the korg/roland/hammond prtables. In thoses cases you would have a reference sound to match.

The base sound library would be another option - esp where the client wants to have some control.

You should also allow the 'let the player choose' option, after all thats part of the the reason they would go for this service.

Also thinking there may be scope to offer a reamping/leslie service, where a client sends a sound file, which then gets run through the hammond amps and leslie. It would be interesting to see how a part from something like the b4 (without out the overdrive that seem to ruin most of the presets) or suzuki hammond xm1 comes out sounding on the other side of the a real amp and speaker. If it what it did was compelling then before and after samples would be a good selling point. PM me if you would like some samples off b4 or XM1 to try.
