What's the best thing to make them out of, or is it better to use a foam lined wooden box?

I would suggest microfibre on no real basis other than my video camera came with a microfibre drawstring bag and it feels nice. It seems to be non-static generating and fine enough weave to keep dust out.
Otherwise pretty much every mic I own came with a vinyl pencil case...

Thanks Kurt, I was thinking it should be something that won't drop fiber particles.
I've got a couple of LDC's I'm getting foam lined cases for but wanted something in between the headgrill and the foam.
Cheers.

I think microfibre is pretty stable. It certainly doesn't pill or generate dust, I guess that's why they use it for video cameras, which are much more susceptible to damage from small particles than mics I would think.
otherwise perhaps silk would be an option, that'd be what the classics used wouldn't it?

Silk bag would be my call too.

I think, there were some posts here about getting silk inner bag (for sleeping bags) and using the fabric from them as that was a particularly economical way of doing it.

You can get the silk liners from Bargain 3000 or Epic Global on ebay - both have real silk products.
BUT read the fine print if you're searching other suppliers - a lot of the overseas suppliers seem cheap, but it's not silk, but some polyester stuff that generates static.
