Hey guys, I just bought a Neumann W495stb eq, the stereo version. In the manual it says "for floating operation the unit must be connected to a separate transformer such as Neumann 09463002", google does'nt know what the hell this is.
Anyway what would be a suitable transformer for this thing as I would not have a clue? I read somewhere "wsw" & "Hoffer" is what someone noticed in 2 of thier units, so just wondering what would be the best ones to get.
I'll be asking Rob to rack it in the future for me, (so if you're about Rob please chime in), as I thought if I need to hunt around for a great tranny for the thing I'd get onto it sooner rather than later.
Hopefully Rob has some in stock or ideas something great which is easy to get, seeing there is probably multiple choices it would be great to get something extremely good in there. Rob, anyone, what do you guys suggest?
Thanks
Heath

Suitable output transformer?

have a look on german ebay for the guys that are parting out the big neumann consoles , most of them have belly boxes full of neumann trannies that were not put in the modular cassette units ( ie your casing ) for space considerations
nearly all neumann trannies were not made by neumann but by HAFE and a few other german companies unless you speak german you will never track then down so best ask some ebayer with a neumann frame if he has a trannie panel with those numbers on it
that said any high quality bridging line trannie will sort you out i have heaps of them if you want then the brand difference is no big deal in this application

oh yeah we have the blueprints for the mastering consoles they came from here and all the technical docs you could ever need if you are stuck with something that doesnt work.
those eq have a good bottm , good mids and a great top shelf - what else could you ask for ?

Hey thanks Rick for the description on the sound of these units, very much appreciated. I've got a decent little collection now. I'm sure there are bound to be a few technical issues along the way though for sure, but well worth any issues I think. Glad you have a good stock of info on these kasettes.
That's good to know too about the bridging line trannie, yes for sure that would be good if I could buy 1 from you which will do the job. I think I've spent enough time on German ebay, for now. :)
I'll call you soon about that and some other stuff too, cheers.
I've only bought stuff which looks to be in decent condition, no dents or rust.
2 x pairs of NOS ANT eq's, w695b and w696b.
1 pair of Telefunken IPS F2000.
1 pair of Lawo 995/10 same as Filtek mk3
Neumann eq's, pair of w491a and the Neumann W495STB
So yeah a reasonable collection, but I don't think they will all be racked this year. Gotta buy "Green Glue" next.
Yep for sure not much else is needed in a good eq, nice to know the high shelf is great but still has nice bottom and mids, cool. I'm really digging the ANT's I had racked already.
Hey thanks for the link too Jamil.
Cheers.

there was someone asking something about some neumann (insert long ass totally forgettable number)...and there was a link to that Haufe site.
Yeah though I might just take the easy way out and call Rick on this 1.
Farout I wish I could afford 1 of those Neumann consoles, well I can next year, if there are any left. But am keen to put together maybe a 16 channel custom console/summing mixer out of bits and pieces at some stage, would be great to incorporate good quality faders into it. Could be dreaming though.

this unit has an electronically balanced output, so regardless of the output transformer present or not ( and it is left out of the stereo version so they can fit the rest of the circuit in ) the unit will still be balanced out. The advantage of the transformer is that if you put one on the output it becomes more bullet proof. Without the transformer, unbalancing the output ( say shorting pin 3 to pin 1 ) will strain the electronics, you'll lose 6dB, distortion will go up and maybe smoke will come out. With a transformer it don't care wether it sees a balanced or unbalanced load and levels stay the same.
i have some nice Stancors here that happily pass +30dB
but if Rick can sort you with some 1:1 output trannies i'd grab 'em, if you want the output transformer option

Hmmmmm losing 6db, smoke coming out, distortion going up, sounds like a Spinal Tap concert, better get the transformer, I like bullet proof.
Thanks for that Rob.
