cus i was in an apogee demonstration on the day you posted the video, and they were going on about their advancements in word clock and conversions and stuff.
and after that
watching this video was like, funny.

That was a great watch!
But what do the pro's think about what he said about convertors and clocks. I don't mean to stir or anything, but people on TRM forums have talked about better convertors than they have. Better clocking etc. Is there really a difference and also considering what he said about "stacking is parrallel not series" and that having multiple channels combined would not actually multiply the noise etc.
Any comments? Is it truly not worth spending money on better convertors than? Simply just get as many in/outs as you really want/need regardless of the brand etc?
I mean Apogee, Lavry, Weiss etc are massive players that many engineers with much more experience and much more golden ears than me, are raving about and using...

Superman has to talk up his cape because he uses it, or something along those lines.
It's a brave audio engineer who admits to not being able to hear something that everyone around her swears by.
Converters would be the absolute last thing on my list of stuff to upgrade if I was a recording engineer.

Mark,
Wow, that blew me out of the water! Hmm I'm guessing that monitors and mixing environment (accoustics) are pretty important to be able to hear better though.

Definitely the room is something that needs to be looked at as a priority - pretty much every studio rescue they do in SOS mag involves some sort of acoustic treatment.
My cynical side finds it interesting that the guy is one of the principals of real traps who make acoustic treatments.
But then again I have never heard anyone deny the importance of some sort of room treatment for listening or recording.
Given this, what is the most economical way to work out what you should do to treat a particular room, does anyone do remote consulting based on pics/measurements?

I must admit, I'd be happy if my music never sounded like his...I don't even know how to classify that style.
Rick, sorry to hear about your disc. I've ruptured a disc in my lower back a few years back (but not slipped one) so I can partially relate to the pain. Couldn't walk for days after it. Still plays up if my lower back muscles are weak. Working out helps me strengthen it so my muscles take the weight. But that's a slow process and i'm sure you don't want to know anything about moving right now!
His talk has given me food for thought. At least at my level. Maybe one day I'd hear the difference, but I think I need to focus on treating my room. Soffit mounting my monitors and stuff. Back to johnlsayers.com to do more research for me I think.

Yeah I didn't realise how loudly I groaned I was when I got dropped home once, trying to step up the curve. My neighbour actually came out of his house and asked if I was alright. But Yeah, Hot Water = Much Relief!

OK. I'll defintely take that under advisement. Yeah, I've noticed that your monitors and loudspeakers are not in-wall. It looks like you have heaps of bass trapping in the wall behind them. And tell you the truth, I've seen some pictures of studios that produced music I admire, that don't soffit mount. It kinda threw a flag up that I ignored...
It certainly is easier to build without the soffits!

Hi there,
Dwayne...soffits are really a hangover from the era of VERY large playback vibe monitors..JBL 4435 etc
Most of the mixing and balancing these days are done on nearfield and smaller monitors.
I agree with Rick...save your money !
Cheers

Righto. Sounds good to me. What the monitors that I see in Rick's studio? There are those little pair and then the bigger ones. I'm sure my room wouldn't be big enough for loudspeakers like that...and my budget not big enough for the small ones...haha. Just be interested in knowing anyhow...unless it's one of those things that no-one's allowed to know...or they're custom made...secret sauce jobbies and I'm ignorantly asking "that which must not be asked"...lol.

soffit mounts are a whole thing that works perfectly on paper , i have just never seen a room that actually works in real life
you have to build massive walls and get the speaker placement exactly right first time to the mm
nobody ever does
in my new studio we will have massive and i mean massive speakers
i like the idea of being able to move them around untill they are perfect , we will see if i do

Yeah that was the bit I was quite paranoid about. What if we stuff up the positioning! Since we built our factory I've noticed that a wall that you think is 'square' ain't necessarily so! So it doesn't become a great point of origin! I could already hear the arguments with me and my dad! lol. But yeah I have quite a long room so I want to have a mixing end and a live end for recording accoustics, vocalists, percussion stuff. Might need some freestanding absorbers between them to prevent reflections coming back from live end to the mixing end. Maybe need to do some mid/low absorbtion in the freestanding if it keeps returning them from the live end.
