1U rack case for 1073?
Seeing as I succesfully racked my V72's without losing a finger, I wish to rack my Shep SN8, which is a 1073 drop in replacement.
Does anyone know if
a) a 1073 will go in a 1U rack, it's 1.75 inch so it should...maybe..?
b) where to get a 1U rack that's deep enough. Altronics only have them in 2U. I haven't had any luck finding one somewhere else.
Thanks.
PS, if anyone thinks that the cost to get a pro to rack something is high, I can now testify that it is not. Absolutely no friggin way is it too high.
The V72s look good, but if I was much busier it would be shopped out for sure next time.

Pictures of the V72 racking please Andy. If we can't see it...it didn't happen
I have my first and only V72 in with Dr Rob at the moment.
also;
Forgive me if I'm wrong but... isn't the shep/neve faceplate or cassette fractionally wider than what the 1U would usually like?

Re: 1U rack case for 1073?
Hey Ben, it's most likely a few mm too wide. I'm not at the studio but I'm going to measure it tomorrow. A 2U case just feels like a waste of rack space for one pre.
Only got an outside of the V72's here atm. I can hear techs' eye's rolling
, but I like the blue leds, and I have about 50 of them to work through. I actually only used the blue for +48
because I got carried away drilling holes and forgot to change to a smaller bit for the led in Joe's kit. Dunno what I'm going to do for labelling, maybe nothing.
I know what each switch is, standard - HPF, -20db, phase, +48 (go between) left to right and input level in the middle - I'm running them flat and attenuating input, no gain control.
I've never really found myself wishing I had more gain on these.
I may add fet di's in which case I'll have di where the bottom knob is and put the other knob and di on the left side. Power switch is centred but looks off in this pic because when I
looked through the camera at the right level the bright blue lights burned my retinas. Worst part is cutting the slots. Dremel. Joe Malone's stuff is a godsend for techtards like myself. Holepunches rule.

Damn...oh well just have to get one more to even things up.

Agreed...
V72's racking looks hot Andy. Nice job. Still anticipating internal shots:)

Re: 1U rack case for 1073?
a 1073 is a fraction too high for a 1 unit rack
i have done it over the years by
A: not using the "top" of the case
B:cutting out the 1073 profile so it sticks out the top
C:getting a 1 unit tray custom made
things i found out
neves are too heavy to put it a rack without the top , or with a carved up top
custom trays ended up weaker still
1 unit neve racks a a ticking timebomb of ... "well that didnt work better redo it "
save yourself the heartache and go two units ... use it as an excuse to add the vu meter fader and 48v switches that you need to use these things properly

Re: 1U rack case for 1073?
Yeah you're right Rick. I kinda knew the answer. I was looking at some of Joes meters last night. I already have a power supply with phantom and enough juice for a pair of modules, but it aint
got no phase or pad and I want a di so I might ditch the power supply I have and go with a Joe kit again. Now I know how to put the ribbon cables together the right way and not break the connector
trying to get it apart after putting it together the wrong way..

Can't you add a Gobetween kit with DI and keep your original power supply? That's probably the easiest way. Just run the 48v tap to the Go Between and leave the 24v lines connected straight to the modules?

Re: 1U rack case for 1073?
HI Alistair, yeah I can and might, but it's a big whoppin toroidal setup that is knda heavy, so I may prefer to just use one of Joe's PS's as they are smaller and I'll only ever be using one
module in this rack.
module in this rack.

Re: 1U rack case for 1073?
I just ordered one of Joe's ACDC supplies to rack up 4x 1073 clones I've built- although they are just pre's, no EQ's so probably more like 1290's. Not sure what the power draw of the EQ section is, but Joe suggested that each pre only needed 125mA at 24v, so yeah, you should be able to use a pretty tiny toroidal along with it. The 30Vdc toroidal I have is pretty small, and that's to run four.....

Re: 1U rack case for 1073?
you dont need phase ( it should be on the unit )
you dont need a pad - you really dont want to pad these things actually
but what you do really do need is a fader and a VU meter
on a real 1073 you either jumper pin k and l (i think off hand ) or put a 5 k fader -pot there
the unit is designed to HAVE the fader in circuit so put it there i reckon
the vu meter will keep you in the right gain stage at all times and this is the critical thing about getting the "in your face" neve sound
running it in the sweet spot
i dont know what the shep stuff does
but all the same joes stuff is goodo buy with confidence

I dare say you'll need phase + phantom with the Shep... but the pad shouldn't be necessary. DI + fader would also do the trick.
Andy....Too many of those blue LED's and your studio will feel like a blue light disco.

Re: 1U rack case for 1073?
Yeah, got phase on the Shep, forgot about that. I already have yellow leds on the exisiting supply, but if I changed them I'd use red to match the gain knob that's on the module.. Ben I'm wiring the rest of the blue ones into a vest to wear out at night.
Same pins for fader on the Shep, they were made to drop into an 80 series console. They are jumped at the moment.
I'll probably look at just going with what I have in a 2U then I only really need to pay for a case and a pot and a meter, oh yeah plus a meter buffer kit, oh and a fet di, some panel mount xlrs if I've got none lying around, a hat with a propellor on top....
My Dremel is cowering in the corner.

Cool....like the Midnight Cowboy Andy. You'll need a horse and then ride it down Acland St at night ....
You should get quite a few looks... if anyone can see past the blinding LED's.
I dare ya

Re: 1U rack case for 1073?
in regard to that pot it is specified as a 5k pot ( 4k7... i think )
But after years of trying different options i always use the sealed 10k pots that neve used for other things in their consoles
just jumpering the link on the module doesnt set up the gain stages correctly on neves i dunno about sheps
what ever is going on with the log tracking of the neve 10k pot when you set it at 12 o clock you end up with exactly
the right gain steps
pull it to the left and and it is just like neve invented it pull it to the right and you can grab an extra 5 db or so
so you just aim the pot at noon and then set the gain stage knob till the vu meters are about ovu .
this setup its very elegant in design - verses just using the gain stage knob for level - its too coarse and a bog standard 5k pot
doesnt ever seem to work like the P&G faders did i console
its probably not quite right using the wrong end of a 10 pot - but its only a resistance value
but it works much better then a 5 k pot does on a raw module - maybe there is some other loading in the desk that would change this or tracking values to the original faders but
for raw real neve modules - my system is the go
send me a self addressed overnight bag and i will send you one or two of the magical 10k neve pots (used but still good)
for free so you can save up for that propeller hat
and the forum tshirt and sticker

you know i waited for the promise of blue leds for many years
when they finally arrived on the scene it was a bit like waiting to be old enough to shave
exciting at first but it turned out to be totally overated and in fact a drag
i'm good for leds thanks

.........if you want some blue LED's, just buy some 2nd hand Avalon gear ( quite cheap at the moment in the US if the Oz $ holds) and part it out for the LED's.

Rick, the difference in using a P+G audio fader may be related to the log-law used . P+G are BBC log law, where as Alps, Duncan, Audiofad etc are (usually) standard log law

Re: 1U rack case for 1073?
yes and the thing is you are replacing a long throw linear fader with a rotory pot
things were bound to get weird
when i discovered the trick with the 10k neve part having unity gain at exactly 12 oclock
and only a little extra to the right but the whole fadout to the left i figure it was some neve law specd pot
neither a bog standard log or linear pot does this , good thing i have so many of the 10k neves ones

Re: 1U rack case for 1073?
Ya know I was just looking through this thread for something and I thought as the end to the story I should add an addendum....
We got into the studio to use the V72s for their first session not long after they were finished, hooked them up to a pair of 87's and they sounded great. Then I wanted to pad it a little and when I turned the variable pad pot there was scratching like a dog at a flea circus. I couldn't work it out, then found it was only when the phantom was on. I though DC getting in somewhere maybe...? Went back to the bench and pulled them apart scratching my head, from the fleas, and after tracing all the wire realised I had wired the signal connections to the go between boards BACKWARDS.
So there ya go, Joe's stuff is so good it even works in reverse, although when we played back those first recordings we kept hearing someone say "I buried Paul".
