Analog tape bulk eraser

Hi there,

Ive got a Sony HE 2 magnetic head eraser.
Can I use that to bulk erase a 1 inch tape(waves he-2 wildly around the tape!)..or do I need to obtain a bulk eraser ?

I'm not sure you'll put much of a dint in the 1" reel with your demagnetiser John. Could take weeks if it works at all.
Bulk eraser would be the way to go. Only takes a minute.
I think the strength of the demag wands compared to the force of the bulk eraser is no match.
Someone else might like to confirm and/or extend on that.

Wonder where I can get a cheapish one?
I see there's a Wiercliffe model 8 at micks... But I have feeling its for batch rolls of cassette tape ?

I've never done it myself, I have a bulk eraser, but I have heard that a TV de-gausing wand will do the job. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has actually used one successfully.

Take them to a scrap metal yard and pick them up with the giant electromagnet.
Pass them through an MRI machine.

Your local community radio station may have one laying around that you could use (or buy?)

i have a weifcliffe eraser or two in the shed
but they are so heavy i am not even going to move them near to a power point to see if they work


the cure is simple put your tapes on the machine hit erase on all channels
get to the end flip the tape over hit erase again ( so its upside and backwards )
run it forwards one more time in erase - and i doubt you have anything left to bleed through
if you do , slow the speed down and try again but twice is usually overkill

Or spool it across a rare earth magnet, like the old VHS erasers did..

Suppose it's the cheapest way out
Just not sure if the tapes I have are going to clog the machine...maybe time to buy some new tape
Is your Wiercliffe a model 8 ?
Just trying to work out if the one at Micks is for cassette spools or for normal recording tape
I'd better ask him I suppose !

i dunno what the model numbers are
next time i walk past them i will have a look
i have seen a lot of weircliffes at auctions usuall they are the 2" spool video / audio ones

Yep,I've got a couple of the big ones and a 7 inch one (for carts).Class 1 hernia material, 2 person lift always.As for extension cords, needs a special one .They draw 15 amps,so special PowerPoint too.Don't go near one with your wallet in your pocket, not good for credit cards with a magnetic strip,probably not your iPhones best friend either.They'll just about pull the fillings out of your teeth
