It's their live perfomance on the Ellen show. Not really a shining example. :-)

That may explain.............fortunately or unfortunately, I wasn't "blessed" with the audio, as such my reaction was based on their visuals..............too many years "studying psych, human behaviour and body language, etc" :-\
ChrisO.....I think. Oh, and F*#K Google, ask me!

Actually I thought it was a pretty good effort, especially considering how difficult it would have been to live up to the polished studio version. that's where having people think the original was live (for whatever reason) can come back and bite you on the arse.

obviously the guy singing the high parts was struggling (try singing that line! he's right at the edge of his range) - but honestly I found that performance more impressive than the original. Although I have no doubt that from the moment they were booked to appear on Ellen they have been doing nothing else but practice it!

Manning wins on the strumming behind the headstock call!

I thought the guy singing the verses had a great voice either way- he sounded great.
I did think on the recorded version the guy singing the chorus was very 'perfect' and funny sounding- maybe very well tuned.

Lol. Yeh, no doubt.

Regardless, they have 30 odd million hits in no time. I'm sure Gotye would love the exposure. Hopefully he is getting some cred or royalties for penning this great track. I'm not personally overly keen on the production of his album but this track was outstanding.

Just my 2 cents

I guess this answers the whole live or not thing.

Yeah it does - a very, very decent performance still. Some of the notes were a little off, but I've been on a show like that and the monitoring is somewhere between awful and non-existent.

Apparently he was sick/recovering on the day of the performance actually, which makes perfect sense given his tone and diminished range.

Just watched this - pre recorded for sure.
No wonder it took 14 hours to get the right "take" (mime) - still cool idea to think of the concept and record it in advance of filming. No way is it a live recording - the mic's tell the truth that it's pre recorded.
Good promo for Goyte (pronounced Goatie in the burbs)

I must admit, when I first heard his name I thought it was "Goat Yip".
