I wasn't really thinking of going as far as an Avocet - but if the right price is right then I might

I'll second Robs unit.
The main problem with a lot of these type of units is most of them will compromise your monitoring clarity. (eg Mackie big Knob and most of the other units under $2k)
All of your work is all perceived through your monitor controller
Robs one is passive - the only way to go if you want a seriously clear sounding box.
Or make your own passive one if funds are tight

Yep. Totally passive balanced signal path, 3 ins, 3 outs, phase change L or R, flip stereo and mono (L, R or sum), volume control with dim and mute and independent headphone volume. All for much less than a BK.

sm audio do one for $99 ( red thing )
i just fitted out ( acoustically ) a zillion dollar tv post house with a couple of audio suites
i looked at all their zillion dollar gear and then clocked the monitor controller
oh well .. good enough for masterchef to have $99 volume controllers
with the super tight cash control problems they must have ( er ha ha )
good enough for
the rest of us
onwards and upwards

... it looks pretty versatile. Anyone here using one?
Says it's passive, which is A Good Thing, right?

I have an M-Patch 2 but I needed talkback so I switched to a cheap, nasty, noisy mixer. Looks like the 4 has it, might need to upgrade...

Thanks for the offers guys, but I think I will be getting something custom made by Rob that can drop into a good spot on my desk and have just what I need on it, nothing more, nothing less.
Cheers!

Re: WTB - Good monitor controller....watchya got?
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the Kush Audio Main Gain. From most accounts it is on par with some of the more expensive units in terms of transparency, but at a much more affordable price point. Can anyone comment?

Re: WTB - Good monitor controller....watchya got?
An audio friend Nigel Vilella (http://www.ultimamusic.com/index.html) made one for us, completely passive & uses top notch knobs & pots.
Think it cost $350 from memory, has A & B speaker outs, main & aux in, mono, 20 db cut and mute switches.
Haven't looked back since.
Cheers
- actually further to that pretty sure there was an article Rob wrote in Audio Tech about building your own monitor controller if you want to go down that path too...
