U47 for only $390...

Postby Manning » Tue Jul 03, 2012 5:27 pm

... the only catch being you have to be living in 1954.

Still this (very) old ad gave me a chuckle so I thought I 'd share.

(Ok, so the pic won't fit - just click the link above.)

notice they say "non" directional instead of omni.... wonder when that term came in?

Man, wouldn't I have loved to be around in the 50's... U47's, strats,Les Pauls, corvettes, Rock and Roll just starting to take off...

You could buy a house in Double Bay for $390 in 1954. :D

Back in the 50's my Dad was a fireman with the Birmingham Fire Brigade (UK) and he was getting 4 pounds and ten shillings a week, equivalent to US$9.00. So it would have taken him 43.33 weeks wages to pay for a U47. A fieman today is on around US$1000.00 per week, so a U47 would have to cost $43,330.00 to be equivalent. Everything is relative.

According to the RBA, the value of $390 (well, £195 in pre-1996 AU currency) in 1954 was equivalent to $5,999.61 in 2011. So - not too far off from the pricing of current Neumann flagship models, really.

But ... still a fair way short of the silly money some folk are paying on fleaBay. :-s
