How often do you change your studio monitors?

Postby Drumstruck » Thu Oct 18, 2012 11:33 am

Hi all,

I wonder about this often - sticking with monitors you know / changing to something new .... what are your thoughts / reasons?

My mains (midfield) are a pair of prototype monitors made by Plessey at Villawood that I purchased in 1978 - custom made Plessey crossovers / cabinets with Fostex edgeless woofers / soft-dome mid / soft-dome tweet. Needless to say I love 'em / know 'em / have no plans to change 'em.

My 5.1 setup is C-V and not in the same league...... but they'll do for a while....

What's your stance on your spkrs?

Find good ones that you like and learn them inside out.

I have had my B&W 602's since 98 and I still feel most comfortable recording and mixing on them. I have tried 15 inch Tanoy Golds....not used to them.... and my Duntech PCL 10's I love and have mixed a few projects on but I just know the B&W's better.
I have just got some Duntech Esquire's, in transit, so I suppose I will let you know after I have had some time with them.

thanks gents - as I suspected, knowing your spkrs well being more important than keeping up with the latest molypolyunobtainum cones etc. #:-s

I remember aurotones being a defacto standard for home reference spkrs, but they seem to have been replaced with various brands nowadays - perhaps this is one area where keeping up with the average home listener's kit means change?
