FS: Apogee AD16x, Apogee DA16x - with HD cards

Hey guys,

I have a pair of Apogee 16x converters up for sale (or trade for a Lynx Aurora + cash).
Both are in great condition - except for the DA16x which is suffering from the old dodgy power button issue. Its a common problem, and can be bypassed by moving jumpers inside the unit (it will just turn on when you apply power to it). Both contain the venerable C-777 big ben master clock.

DA16x with X-HD card - $850.
AD16x with X-HD card - $850.
Both together - $1600.

Hey Nath, why the change if I may ask? I had the Rosetta 800 and really liked it but moved to the Lynx 16 channel box. Have always wondered how the AD16/DA16 combo compares?

when i first went HD and set up the studio as i currently konw it it..
i A/B'd (well - not a/b.... a/b/c/d) a number of converters in my place
list was

SSL alphalink
Apogee AD/ AD16
lynx aurora
digi 192 (which i was never really going to go with, but wanted a "benchmark")

my general thoughts were

- the 192 was noticeably brittle, and less "deep" than all the rest
- the SSL was the most "sterile" it sounded fine/ good on its own, but next to the others didnt sound "nice" if that makes sense.
apogee and lynx - where both lovely. sounded both accurate/ real, but also not clinical or nasty in anyway.
picking between them in a blind situation was difficult/ pointless.
i would happily have had either

i went with the lynx, based on the fact i wanted 32io
which was two lynx boxes, or four of the apogees (2 ad and 2 da)
so price, and convenience (1ru unit showing up in tools as a 192)
was what made me go the way i did.
though if i was judging on audio alone, the apogee would have been equal (different, but equal)

i now have SSL's as well
but for a different reason (conversion to MADI in some of our live rigs)
so im certainly not saying they were bad.
just no what i wanted in the studio.

thats just my thoughts on the comparison though (and it was some years ago)

Thx for the reply, I went for the lynx for the same reasons but curiosity always kills the cat..

The apogee's have been nothing but terrific!
They sound absolutely great, and have never faulted. The advanced routing mode is an excellent addition as well (routes both the analogue and digital I/O through the expansion card).

Just moving to something more mobile. Probably an Apollo or something. I don't really know yet.

Someone buy the AD16x :-w

All sold!

On a side note, I got to play with an SSL Alphalink AX with Madi card for a few days and now own an Aurora 16.
I really liked the SSL. I actually think I liked it more than the Aurora and the 16x's. The aurora it is though, as its I/O is much more suited for my needs.
